June Blake – horticulturist, photographed in her garden, Blessington Co. Wicklow, 10th September 2014
These hands grew vegetables when they were eight. Then sold the vegetables to their mum. The hands have always been busy, loving to work, making jewellery, working on the farm, and growing vegetables. Over a decade ago, the hands started to learn more about plants and studied horticulture. They got busy propagating plants and selling them. Then they started painting pictures with plants, the soil of the garden the canvas on which the masterpieces were created. These hands love the feel of the air at dusk, nature is still, it communicates its beauty. Digging in the soil, sculpting earth mounds into shapes, placing plants to achieve floral perfection, all these things relax the mind, let worries go and the head feels good when the hands touch the earth.
