Siobhan Murphy, retired, photographed in her garden in Kimmage, Dublin on 8th September 2014
These hands remember their mothers’ tending to a flower garden. When these hands were younger they climbed apple trees and picked the fruit. Over the years of working, these hands always enjoyed escaping to the garden; picking a sprig of rosemary, pulling a weed or brushing a soft clump of grasses. Actions refreshing memories, of cacti on a windowsill, cared for by young hands that were still in school.
The hands still love cacti and succulent plants. They also love hostas, clematis and other plants too. The hands studied when they retired from work, attending Pearse College to complete a Fetac Level 5 course in horticulture.
The hands relax while working in the garden, pottering for hours on end, loving to be outside, enjoying the long evenings of summer in the sun.
